Real Assets Overview
Real Assets (also known as Hard Assets) are those assets that are tangible in nature and generally provide for inflation protection.
Real Assets cover multiple sectors of investable assets including infrastructure, real estate, natural resources as well as mobile assets like aircrafts, vessels, rails, tankers, and equipment.
Real Assets- as an investment asset class- falls under the Alternative Investments classification and shares its most common themes of being:
- low correlated with traditional mainstream long only equities and fixed income,
- difficult to determine its current market value due to the lack of quoted markets,
- difficult to trace its historical performance due to limited historical risk and return data,
- require high degree of investment analysis and unconventional due diligence, and
- are typically illiquid with typical high transaction cost structure.
Unlike quoted markets, most of real assets are originated through arms’ length transactions with businesses and entities in private transactions, hence, requires different mindset and skills to analysis each investment on a standalone basis.
